Watching Ball

October 04, 2026

We were up very late Friday, watching a meaningless game between two colleges that I've already forgotten, and the commercials were completely different. The buys must be substantially easier when thousands of eyeballs are on the game instead of hundreds of thousands or millions. But we got this gem, which I've never seen before.

In looking for this embed code, I see that it was a Super Bowl ad back in January, but I guess when it aired, I was off somewhere. Maybe having a shat.

I've probably mentioned it before, but for 20 years or so, we've played a season long game where you have to pick a college football underdog to win outright every week. There was this golden age where i could pick them. I even won two years in a row, back when watching a game in high-def meant spending 8 grand on a TV.

The last few years, I can't pick them worth a damn. To the point where I'm convinced that my pick affects the outcome of the game.

So if you have a favorite team, and if that team is favored over an opponent that you're worried about, Venmo me $7 (@Benjamin-Schultz-20) by noon on Friday, and I'll make your opponent my underdog pick, guaranteeing you a W.

I'm outside at almost 1:00am on Sunday watching my pick this week (Cincinnati) lose badly.

Leftovers. Except for the cat food. That's just up there so that the dogs don't get it.

The forecast today was for rain all day, which never materialized. But I was locked in to be under cover, and I had bought a giant brisket to smoke. It cooked for 12 hours, and now it rests in a lukewarm oven overnight. I don't know why, but that's what the Texas barbecue YouTuber told me to do. It smells great, but will it be as tough as a belt, or will it fall apart into delicious sandwiches tomorrow?

While the fire was hot, I fired up some splcy bratwursts over the direct heat and threw a salmon steak on the other side, far far from fire, but well into the smoke. It alone is a delicious buttery smokey meal for a couple days.

I've got games on, but also, some tunes cranked up. We've upgraded the whole-hose sound experience with new living room speakers and a sound bar in the Beagle. It sounds amazing. Gotta say, though. the song playing as I type this kind of sucks. Chest Fever, by The Band. Maybe I should shelve the new music discovery mission for the night and stick to some of my favorites.
