Favorite Albums 2024
January 10, 2025
I love and also hate going through different Best Albums lists this time of year. It's a little overwhelming -- so many albums that are supposedly great but that I never heard of.

Christmas Music and One Jamaican Song
November 15, 2024
This morning, I found a data set with all of the data for Billboard's Hot 100 charts. So I did what nerds do. Ko has started up with the Christmas songs already, so I looked at the most interesting chart history I can think of.

Boat Music
April 28, 2024
At the time of this post, we're in the middle of our Atlantic crossing. There's a lot of time for music and books, so that might be what I'm posting about for a little while.

Misunderstanding song lyrics is a source of comedy that goes back as long as humans have been singing.

Jazz Fest
May 08, 2007
It seems a little like we had a three day weekend. Not bad. What stretched the weekend out was a busy Friday night, that made it seem like two nights. I got home around 6:00, which is super-late for a Friday, but then we grilled steaks with a few others. That seemed like the Friday night activity.

Working for the Week(end)
December 18, 2006
As I mentioned in my previous post, I've been out and about a ton lately. I spent the week of December 4 away from the office, on a rather dull work trip. It was four straight days of meetings, and through almost all of it, I was talking or people were paying attention to me. (That might seem natural to you if you don't do a lot of meetings in corporate America. In reality, most meetings require you to only pay about 35-40 percent of your attention.)

Voodoo Fest 2006
November 03, 2006
Last weekend, we got to New Orleans on Saturday afternoon. Mrs. theskinnyonbenny and I sat in a bar talking to the tourists from Baltimore and keeping an eye on the football games while we waited for our friends to arrive. We walked around the French Quarter in the evening, and once it was dark, went on one of those haunted house walking tours.

Heartbreak Songs
October 26, 2006
On my quest to listen to all of my music alphabetically, I'm up to the songs that start with "Heart." You might not be surprised to hear that there's a lot of country music in this section. Lots of country music writers out there with heartache. So how do I make sure that I listen to all of the songs?

Fourth of July, New York
July 07, 2006
Twice on the Fourth of July, I got called a big fatty. The first time, I was handling my gut -- grabbing handfuls and jiggling it up and down while seated. Putting this in writing makes me realize that it's odd behavior, but I'm sure it was to make some point or other. Amanda asked, "Goodness, you aren't riding your bike any more?"

Summer of '86
November 23, 2005
Many of my readers will be too young (or too old -- Hi Dad), to remember the day before Bryan Adams wasn't a pussy. Back in the summer of 1986, I was 15, and enjoying the freedom that comes with being old enough to run wild, but too young to drive and work. But most of my friends were 16 and driving, so it was the best of both worlds. And this isn't one of those "I didn't know how well I had it" types of posts. I knew that it was great even at the time.

The Day Ted Nugent Killed All the Animals
October 29, 2004
Does anyone besides me like that song, The Day Ted Nugent Killed All the Animals? The IPOD picked that song for me while I walked the dog last night. It got me thinking that someone could go out and put out a whole page explaining the cultural references in that tune. I'll go ahead and do it myself.

Voodoo Fest 2004
October 20, 2004
I went to Voodoo Fest this past Saturday. There was beautiful weather, and it was good to be outside hearing live music. Let's jump right in with a review of the headliners' performance:
