I'll Go Ahead and Fix College Football For You

I guess it's going to have to be me to fix college football. The Protect College Sports Act is going to die on the vine. Just look at the number of representatives from states in the Big Ten and SEC footprints. There's just not a chance.

There are some serious attempts to fix what is the main problem -- every single college player is a free agent every single year. That's not a model that would be sustainable in any professional league, and yes, the power conference college football is a professional league.

You can't make rules that affect people's right to test the market and make money unless those people grant the power to a union to collectively bargain on their behalf. I don't know if they have to be literal employees to unionize, but either way, that needs to happen. Then, the union can trade some free market rights for other financial guarantees.

Done.

I watched Tommy White's MLB debut the other night.

Now for my proposal, and this one is going to make the whole calendar a lot better: Group of 6 (or whatever the non-power number is now) conferences get to start play on August 1.

I've got four baseball games on the screen. T-Mobile had a promotion where they pay for the MLB.com subscription, so I've never watched so much baseball. I catch the Reds about once a week. I watch LSU players go when I find them. I like to watch Ohtani when he's on the mound. Get that knee better soon, Shohei.

But I don't care 1/10th as much as I would if say Navy and Rice were getting ready to kick off. My plan gives those smaller conferences the chip to bargain for much increased TV rights contracts, which would give those programs and those players much needed funding. Most importantly, it gives us something to watch in August.

Let's make this happen.
