Francine Aftermath
September 17, 2024
Some folks have been wondering how the new boat did during her first New Orleans hurricane. Short answer: just fine. She looks exactly like I left her before the storm. But storm-time New Orleans lakefront is interesting enough. Here's a story in pictures. And one little video at the end.

A recent Facebook comment got me to thinking about some of the characters from my early sailing days.

Boat Music
April 28, 2024
At the time of this post, we're in the middle of our Atlantic crossing. There's a lot of time for music and books, so that might be what I'm posting about for a little while.

Orca-strating a Passage
November 10, 2023
This week, a group of Orcas sank a sailboat near the Strait of Gibraltar. You've likely being seeing these stories for several months. They've attacked a couple hundred boats over there. Very often, they do little or no damage. A few times, they've sunk the boat. This is nerve-wracking.

Travel Update, Site Update, Social Butterfly
November 01, 2023
There are a lot of upcoming changes to the site, as I still try to get all of the old stuff re-posted. Not much here, other than to report on some planning that we've done, as well as some info on what site stuff is coming up. We finish up enumerating how immensely popular theskinnyonbenny family is this week.

Long Island Happy Times
May 31, 2023
As I mentioned when we last gathered, there are lots of reasons to spend time on Long Island, Bahamas. There were at least two things that I'll remember about that island forever, and a funny story to go with them. Here's a post about sailing in 2021 that isn't all disasters.

Don’t Worry About Long Island Robbers
May 26, 2023
We were at Great Exuma that Summer just before Fourth of July weekend. Our generator had long since shit the bed. Goodbye, sweet air conditioning. Goodbye working outlets from which we can charge the devices that we need in order to pay the bills. And goodbye to the most efficient way to keep the boat's batteries topped off.

Summer 2021 - How We Made a Weeklong Trip Take Half the Summer
March 08, 2022
Our 2021 sailing trip to the Bahamas was an absolute disaster. Before we left, lightnight fried our boat's electronics. The generator didn't make it to Key West. And we lost tons of consumer electronics to Neptune as well. We managed to have some fun though. This is how the trip started.

Summer Meetup
October 20, 2021
We had a hell of a time getting to the Bahamas this Summer. Our friends Robert and Crystal might have even done worse than us. Also, some really pretty pictures in this post.

Marathon, boat related, beer drinking, swim meet. This post is just a disjointed mess of small things that have been going on.

Easter Week Trip
April 06, 2016
We spent the week of Easter on the sailboat. Almost entirely, we were tied up at Pontchartrain Landing on the lakeshore. It's an almost unknown RV Park and Marina, and not at all a bad place to hole up for a week.

Mandeville Sailing
October 30, 2015
We decided to sail to Mandeville, a town that's usually four or five hours from our home dock. It's a pretty standard trip for us, but this one spirals into nuttiness.

Purging My Innermost Complaints
May 28, 2015
I keep hearing something that is turning me into a deranged, foamy-mouthed lunatic. I'm not sure if this has just started, or if I've just started noticing. But I keep hearing people say "bolth" instead of "both." Are these maniacs stooges for the "L" lobby? Also, comments on a podcast, some journalism, and a sailboat electronics installation. It's not as disjointed as it sounds.

This Week in Happiness
November 20, 2014
Vanya's school had a Thanksgiving thing where we all go eat with the class. V served himself a typical little kid lunch: chicken nuggets, mashed potatoes, and a roll. While he was eating, the mom who brought the potatoes stopped and asked him how he liked them.

Know Your Steel
February 04, 2005
Last March, there was an interesting post to a sailing-related email list to which I subscribe. I get a good bit of interesting stuff, and I generally just drag the message over to a folder so that I can give it a good read some time later.
