Traffic Light

May 27, 2011

I'm sure that everyone has had the fantasy of a gadget that would change the traffic lights from red to green as they pulled up to the intersection.

I didn't know it until today, but there actually is such a thing.

I was the first car at a busy intersection. I waited through the cycle, and my light turned green. I took my foot off of the gas, and my Jeep started to lurch into the intersection. When I looked up, the light was yellow. I stopped, and then I noticed that an ambulance was making its way into the intersection.

What else is going on with all of this equipment at the top of the street light/traffic signal tower?

The light went from Go to left arrow go, and sure enough, the amulance was turning left. So whatever they have is smart enough so that the ambulance people can indicate which way they want to go.

From a high level, I'm impressed and appreciative of such technology. Anything to get the emergency vehicles where they need to go as quickly as possible.

But this morning, I was not a fan of waiting through the light to cycle through all of its other options before getting back to my green light.

By the way, if anyone knows where I can get one of these devices on the black market, I would consider paying a pretty penny for one.
